You’re on court.

We’ve sent the details to your WhatsApp. Come to reception about ten minutes early so you have time to change — your coach will meet you there.

  • Indoor sports shoes with a pale, non-marking sole
  • Normal sportswear and a water bottle
  • Nothing else — we hand you a racket and balls on court

What actually happens

Nobody is watching. Everybody starts here.

The most common reason people put off a first class is not knowing what they are walking into. So here is the whole thing, start to finish.

  1. You pick a time

Straight into the coaching calendar — no waiting for a callback, no form that disappears into an inbox. Your WhatsApp confirmation arrives immediately.

  2. You arrive at the stadion

IJsbaanpad 43, ten minutes’ walk from Amsterdam Zuid, free parking on site. Come to reception about ten minutes early.

  3. 45 minutes on court

How to hold the racket, how to move, how to hit the ball on purpose. Within half an hour you will be playing real rallies — and breathing much harder than you expected.

  4. An honest read on your level

At the end your coach tells you which group or programme actually fits, or that you would be better off waiting. No pitch, no obligation.

The bit you were worried about

Straight answers.

“I have genuinely never played.”
Neither had most of the people in our beginner groups a year ago. The trial class assumes you have never held a racket — that is the default, not the exception.
“I am not fit enough for squash.”
Squash is as hard as you make it. In a trial you rally at your own pace with as many breaks as you want. Fitness is what squash gives you, not what it asks for up front.
“Do I need to be a member of the club?”
No. For your trial the court is on us — no membership, no court fee, nothing to arrange with the centre yourself. If you carry on afterwards we will explain the court rates, including the cheaper off-peak hours.
“I do not have a racket or the right shoes.”
Racket and balls are provided. Bring indoor trainers with a pale, non-marking sole — any normal running or gym shoe you would wear on a wooden floor is fine.
“I do not know anyone there.”
You will. The Frans Otten Stadion is home to the largest squash community in Amsterdam, with hundreds of active players. Finding someone at your level is the easy part.

From people who train here

Beginners, club players and world top-50 professionals.

“I can’t recommend it enough. First, I joined Friday ladies-only night. A perfect way to start playing squash and find a bunch of girls to play with. Now I am having private classes with Rich. He is an amazing coach. His classes are very tailor-made and he always pushes you to play your best game.”

Sonia Fleury MarinAmsterdam, Netherlands

“Coaching with Rich has been fantastic. He quickly identified the key areas for improvement, explains good technique very clearly, has a wide array of exercises to keep it both fun and challenging, provides great feedback and is ultimately very patient. He has a genuine passion to help people improve.”

Harry DarkeAmsterdam, Netherlands

“I had many sessions with Rich King while training in England. He is a great coach who definitely made a difference in my game. I always enjoyed the pressure sessions he put me through. His coaching helped my movement in particular, which helped me progress on the professional circuit.”

Questions

Anything else.

Is the trial class really free?

Yes — the class and the court are both free, and we do not take card details to book it. If you decide to carry on afterwards you pay for whichever programme you pick, and not before.

How long is the class?

45 minutes on court. Allow about an hour and a quarter in total so you have time to change and to talk to your coach afterwards.

Can I bring a friend or my partner?

Yes. Book a slot each so we know to put two rackets out — or reply to your WhatsApp confirmation and we will add them.

What if I need to move or cancel?

Reply to your confirmation on WhatsApp, or use the reschedule link in it. There is no charge and no awkwardness — just let us know so the court can go to someone else.

Is there a women-only option?

There is — a Friday ladies-only night, which is how a lot of our women players started. Mention it when you book and we will point you to the next one.

Is this suitable for children?

Junior coaching starts at age seven and runs in dedicated groups and camps rather than adult trials. Book the trial for yourself and mention the children, or come to the Open Day on 13 September, which is built for families.

Where exactly do I go?

Frans Otten Stadion, IJsbaanpad 43, 1076 CV Amsterdam. Come in the main entrance and ask at reception. There is free parking on site and it is a ten-minute walk from Amsterdam Zuid station.
